A Vacation in Munnar Hills, at Kerala

When it comes to hill stations, India has quite a repository of marvels. Munnar hill station, situated in the southern state of Kerala in India, is definitely one of the finest amongst them. Situated around 1600 feet above sea level, this hill station is a welcome retreat for people wishing to escape a sultry summer month.

Dotted with magnificent waterfalls, verdant tea estates and beautiful lakes, Munnar is an ideal vacation spot for nature lovers, honeymooners and for those seeking solitude from a restless urban atmosphere.

Places to Visit in Munnar

As a person travels through the meandering roads on the hills of Munnar, the sight that soothes the most is that of the lush green tea estates, which have spread across the mountain slopes. “The tea estates in Munnar are definitely a welcome site and the dense forest covers support quite a rich wildlife,” says Varsha Sreenivasan, a former reporter at CNBC TV18, and presently a freelance writer.

Just a walk across these vast green fields refreshes the mind and soul and makes for a wonderful repose from a bustling urban existence.

Wildlife and nature enthusiasts can check out the Eravikulam National Park, in the Rajamala-Eravikulam region. This famous national park is known to be the abode of the Nilgiri Tahr, a rare mountain goat species that is fast disappearing from the scene.

According to Sreenivasan, about “1200-1300 Nilgiri Tahrs now exist in this region.” She points out that in the year 1975, this area was declared a sanctuary and finally 3 years later it was given the title of a national park.

Besides, the exotic flora, fauna and zoological elements in the park, make it one of the most stunning sights to behold. “Natural beauty is surely one aspect of these parks. Waterfalls flowing down the mountains and the lush green vegetation is one reason that brings people back to this area again and again,” says Sreenivasan.

The Mattupetty Lake and dam are yet another place to look out for in Munnar. This place captures the scenic beauty of mountains and the Mattupetty Lake, alike. It is also an ideal vacation and picnic spot, as tourists can avail the boating facilities at the dam site. There are small handicraft and village stalls in close vicinity where people can pick little gifts and souvenirs.

“This lake and dam is flocked by tourists over the year. This is also one of the most popular holiday locations in Munnar,” says V. Arun, a self-employed Munnar tour guide.

Not just this, there is the Kundala lake close by and the Kundala Tea Estates to visit. “Other than Mattupetty, Kundala is another place, which most tourists like to visit,” says Arun.

Other Things to Look Out For

Munnar is known for its fresh spices and tea varieties. Those on a vacation can find the best of Indian spices in this region. “Cardamom, turmeric, sandalwood and herbal tea are some of the products that tourists often purchase from Munnar. They are grown here in the hills and are of great quality,” claims Arun.

Though Malayalam is the main language spoken in these hills, people also speak Hindi and English. Vacation packages are offered throughout the year for tourists and the hills are dotted with several hotels, lodgings and resorts.

Munnar is extremely cold during the winter months of November-December and is not a favourable place to visit during the rainy season. “The monsoons visit Kerala around June and roads in Munnar get messy during that time. In winters, temperature drops down to around 8 degrees Celsius. Except these two seasons, people can travel to Munnar any time around the year,” says Arun.
