All National Highways to go digital from December 1

From December 1 the national highways’ toll fee plazas would encourage digital payment to prevent congestion and ensure seamless traffic.

All the lanes would become FASTag lanes except one that will be a hybrid lane to monitor over-dimensional or oversized vehicles.

FASTag is a prepaid tag based on radio-frequency identification (RFID). It will enable auto deduction of toll charges without making the vehicles to stop for cash transaction.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said, “The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has decided to declare all lanes in all toll fee plazas on national highways across the country as dedicated ‘FASTag lanes’ from 1st of December this year.”

FASTag is affixed on the windscreen of vehicles to allow direct toll plaza fee payment from linked prepaid or savings account.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) meanwhile has asked all the toll plazas to identify and resolve logistics problems including that of law and order problem.

All the toll plazas will be equipped with the FASTag infrastructure by December 1.

As of now a FASTag lane is only reserved for the movement of FASTag users, but it is seen even the non-FASTag users pass through the lane, making it crowded. As an aftermath the purpose of FASTags is not being served.
