Assault to doctor may send you jail for 10 years – new draft bill

Attacking a doctor may soon make you serve a jail term for up to 10 years or fine you by Rs 10 lakh. Health Ministry has drafted a bill considering how to deal with rising cases of assault on doctors.

Over the weekend a mob killed a retired septuagenarian doctor in Assam for not being present at the tea estate hospital when a worker died.

A Health Ministry official said, “We want to reduce increasing cases of violence against doctors. We are looking for suggestions on the draft legislation before the bill is finalised. The objections or suggestions may be forwarded within 30 days.”

The draft Healthcare Service Personnel and Clinical Establishments (Prohibition of Violence and Damage to Property) Bill, 2019, was made public on September 2.

Lately assaults on doctors at service have become common across India, mostly at state-run hospitals which are crowded and doctors comparatively attends more patients than private hospitals every day.

Assaults on doctors are usually triggered on the death of a patient alleging lack of attention from doctors.

Doctors claim they are unfairly targeted and have been urging the doctors to bring a new law to provide better protection to them.

Meanwhile, in the Assam retired doctor lynching the medical associations have condemned it.

Colleagues said the 73-year-old Dr Deben Dutta was a soft-spoken, amicable person and had a long as well as illustrious career.
