BJP releases 6th list, drops 2 veterans

Bharatiya Janata Party has come up with its sixth list of candidates for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. With these 47 names the total of announced nominees now reaches 297. Two veterans have been dropped – Karia Munda from Khunti in Jharkhand and Shanta Kumar from Kangra in Himachal Pradesh. The party has also declared support to an Independent candidate from Mandya constituency in Karnataka’s old Mysuru region which is a stronghold of JD-S’ HD Deve Gowda family.

Karia Munda was a deputy speaker between 2009 and 2014 in Lok Sabha. He has been replaced with former Jharkhand chief minister Arjun Munda. Shanta Kumar is a former chief minister of his state and now state transport minister Kishan Kapoor will be contesting from his seat.

The primary reason not to give tickets to such patrons is their age. BJP is dropping candidates who are above the age 75. Earlier the party declined tickets Bhagat Singh Koshyari, 76 and BC Khandhuri, 84, from Uttarakhand, Bijoya Chakravarty, 79, from Guwahati.

Once the top most leader of the party, LK Advani, 91, has also been dropped from contesting the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He represents Gandhinagar and has been replaced by BJP chief Amit Shah.
