BREAKING: Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry on cyclonic storm alert

Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are on high alert by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) as cyclonic circulation is seen gaining strength over Equatorial Indian Ocean and southeast Bay of Bengal. It is predicted to be moving west-northwest thereafter and gain latitude.

The advisory of Met Department reads, “A trough of low at mean sea level lies over the Equatorial Indian Ocean and the southeast Bay of Bengal with a cyclonic circulation aloft extending up to 3.1 km above mean sea level. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is very likely to develop over the Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining central parts of the South Bay of Bengal to the southeast of Sri Lanka by Thursday (April 25).”

It is learned the storm is to intensify into a depression in a period of about thirty hours and turn its route to northwestwards toward Tamil Nadu coast and off the east coast of Sri Lanka.

The alert adds that in about 48 hours the areas are to be hit by a cyclonic storm and to bring heavy rainfall in most of the places over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

The wind speed could be about 60 kmph. It will be accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning.
