General Bipin Rawat completes his three-year-tenure as the Army chief today and amid such good news the government announced he will take over as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), first-ever in India.

The 61-year-old will take over the new office from Tuesday and it is yet to be revealed for how long his tenure will be.

Bipin Rawat will be turning 62 in March. In 1978 he commissioned into the 5th battalion of 11 Gorkha Rifles. Since then he holds vast experience in high altitude warfare as well as counter insurgency operations. He is also Alumnus of Defence Services Staff College, Wellington.

As CDS his responsibilities would be to provide single-point military advise to the government and bring synergy among Army, Navy & IAF by resolving inter-service doctrinal, planning, procurement and operational problems. He need to better manage India’s strategic resources and nuclear arsenal. Streamlining long-term defence planning and procurement process too would be his responsibility.

After the 1999 Kargil conflict the CDS post was strongly recommended by GoM report. Globally more than seventy countries including Germany, France and United Kingdom have such post for integration in military planning and operations.
