Chhagan Bhujbal – Ex-Sena member, OBC face takes oath

Chhagan Bhujbal is the face of OBC in Maharashtra and also the person who was charged with money laundering. He was released on bail earlier this year in May on medical ground and no one then could imagine him becoming a minister in the state government.

The 72-year-old from NCP took oath on Thursday under the Uddhav Thackeray-led government. Just ahead of the state Assembly elections it was speculated he could join Shiv Sena.

Chhagan Bhujbal left Shiv Sena in 1991 over OBC reservation issue and later had undergone a bitter tussle with the then Sena chief Bal Thackeray. He was even on the verge of getting arrested the same year in connection with the Mumbai riots.

Son of a vegetable vendor, he had a tough road in past few years. In March 2016 he was arrested on charges of money laundering under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act. For the next two years he was in prison. His health deteriorated and received treatment at a government hospital.

Chhagan Bhujbal’s nephew Sameer Bhujbal too was arrested and put behind the bars for two years for the same case.
