CWG2018: India Grabs 7 Medals on Day 8; 4 From Wrestling

The Day 8 at Gold Coast was good too for Indian squad to the 21st edition of Commonwealth Games. A total of seven medals were won including four from wrestling.

Sushil Kumar grabbed his third successive gold at the Commonwealth Games defeating South Africa
s Johannes Botha in one minute and 20 seconds on technical superiority.

Wrestler Rahul Aware too won gold on the day in men’s 57 kg category beating Canadian Steven Takahashi. He prevailed 15-7 but at one point he trailed at 6-7.

This was the first CWG of the 26-year-old and his journey to the final was smooth with comprehensive wins over British George Ramm, Australian Thomas Cicchini and Pakistani Muhammad Bilal.

Aware missed last two CWG as the team was sent without trials. He said, “I have been waiting for this medal for the last 10 years. I can’t describe how it feels to claim it. I missed out on 2010, even in 2014.”

Female wrestler Babita Phogat had to settle down with a silver. She defeated Nigeria’s Samuel Bose, Sri Lanka’s Deepika Dilhani and Australia’s Carissa Holland to reach the final. In 2010 she grabbed silver and at Glasgow she claimed a gold. Debutant Kiran won bronze defeating Katouskia Pariadhaven from Mauritius.

In women’s 50m rifle prone Teswini Sawant claimed silver. In discus throw a silver and a bronze were won by Seema Punia and Navjeet Dhillon respectively. For Punia this was her fourth successive CWG medal.

In badminton the team has advanced to the quarterfinals. Paddlers have also made their way to the next round.
