ED to seek P Chidambaram’s remand today

A bit of relief has come for former finance minister P Chidambaram from apex court on Tuesday in the INX Media case. The Enforcement Directorate has been barred from arresting him until Wednesday.

The Supreme Court said views expressed by the Delhi High Court will not influence it in anticipatory bail denial of the senior Congress leader.

A bench comprising Justices R Banumathi and AR Bopanna said P Chidambaram’s case will be heard on merits.

Supreme Court is hearing two pleas by the former minister. In one case he has challenged the CBI remand and the other is against the ED case.

ED is seeking custody of P Chidambaram after the same of CBI is finished for questioning.

The top court is to hear ED’s arguments on Wednesday.

Senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi for P Chidambaram have accused both the ED and CBI of filing cases against the minister only to destroy his reputation with humiliation.

A CBI court extended Monday the remand till August 30.

P Chidambaram said, “I cannot be expected to give answers that the CBI wants to hear. Can it be said that I am evasive because I do not confess.”

Revoking the affidavit filed by ED with claims P Chidambaram has 10 immovable properties and 17 foreign bank accounts in foreign countries, the minister said he has no account abroad.
