Fani to landfall tomorrow; Modi checks preparedness

Cyclonic Fani is expected to landfall tomorrow and ahead of it Prime Minister Narendra Modi has come up with instructions to senior officers of Central Government to coordinate closely with officers of West Bengal, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh to ensure preventive measures and take rescue and relief operational steps as required.

Earlier today Modi chaired a high-level meeting to learn preparedness and the likely path of Fani. He was briefed about provision of adequate resources, deployment of teams from Armed Forces as well as National Disaster Response Force.

Center has sanctioned Re 235.50 crore for West Bengal, Rs 309.37 for Odisha, Rs 234.50 crore for Tamil Nadu and Rs 200.25 crore for Andhra Pradesh.

Home Secretary, Cabinet Secretary and other senior officials from the IMD, NDRF and National Disaster Management Authority attended the high-level meeting.

Earlier this week the Indian Meteorological Department said Fani would be carrying a maximum speed of 175-185 km/h on Friday afternoon while crossing Odisha coast between Gopalpur and Chandbali, south of Puri.

Issuing warning for several districts in West Bengal, Odisha and north coastal Andhra Pradesh the department added that the cyclone is likely to intensify into extremely severe cyclonic storm by Wednesday morning.
