FIR lodged against 10 in Assam for hindering NRC with poems

Though no arrests have yet been made but a case has been filed against ten people in Assam by the state police for their video compilation of poems that tries to defame the Assamese community as xenophobic.

The case has been registered under Section 66 of IT Act of 2000 for computer-related offenses. It is learned the ten of them, mostly belonging to the Muslim community.

It is claimed they tried to hinder the process of NRC with “mala fide intention to create communal disturbances in the state and defame the Assamese people as xenophobic in the world.”

The poem was compiled by Char-Chapori Sahitya Parishad president Hafiz Ahmed. He apologized if his work has hurt the sentiments of any.

Hafiz Ahmed too is the accused among the ten. Guwahati-based journalist Pranabjit Doloi said his intention is to depit picture of xenophobic to Assamese people in the world and it is a serious threat to the national security.

Doloi filed his FIR at the Panbazar police station in Guwahati while another FIR was filed by Bharatiya Janata Party member Tabibur Rahman at Changsari police station in Kamrup district.

Doloi claims that the accused has used in his poem the NRC Serial number in the first paragraph and this is contempt of court.

He added that such an act of Hafiz Ahmed could lead to communal violence at the time of NRC update in the state.
