Free Lifeline Electricity of AAP government is poll stunt: Manoj Tiwari

Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Manoj Tiwari said announcement of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to free consumption of electricity of up to 200 units is a poll stunt as assembly elections in the capital is due early next year.

Manoj Tiwari added, “Kejriwal is announcing freebies in view of the assembly elections.”

The decision of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is effective from Thursday. Those who will consume electricity of up to 200 units get 100 percent subsidy. A 50 percent subsidy is announced for consumption from 201 to 400 units.

Delhi already had the cheapest electricity in India and the new move of AAP government is an added relief to households. In the 2015 election campaign providing cheaper electricity was one of the cornerstones of the party.

Kejriwal called the Free Lifeline Electricity scheme as historic and no bill will be generated to the households that consume up to 200 units.

The CM said, “Nobody says anything if the VIPs and big politicians get free power. Why deprive the common man? Am I wrong in taking this step.”

Meanwhile, the new subsidy is to cost Delhi government about Rs 2,000 crore annually. There are currently about 4.9 million domestic power consumers in the city.
