Goa CM Manorhar Parrikar passes away battling cancer

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar breathed his last Sunday evening at his son’s home in Panaji following a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 63.

The health of former Defence Minister deteriorated worst on Saturday morning and since February 2018 he has been in and out of hospitals in Goa, Delhi, Mumbai and New York.

Earlier this year Manohar Parrikar said he would serve the state till his last breath. In recent months he made public appearances with a tube in his nose. He looked frail.

Following the announcement of his death Sunday evening political leaders from Bharatiya Janata Party started expressing their grief.

Union minister Nitin Gadkari said, “Goa BJP government was formed because of him. He also became defence minister. Again on party’s request, he became the Goa Chief Minister.”

President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted, “Extremely sorry to hear of the passing of Shri Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa, after an illness borne with fortitude and dignity.”

A day of national mourning has been announced by Central government for Monday. All schools and colleges in Goa would remain closed tomorrow.

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi tweeted he is deeply saddened to know about the passing of Goa CM Shri Manohar Parrikar ji.

In year 2000 Manohar Parrikar became the first IITian chief minister in the country and he was then just 44.

The four-time chief minister was the biggest asset of BJP even though he was not able to complete his full term of five years ever.
