Haryana, Maharashtra assembly elections on October 21

Election Commission announced state elections in Haryana and Maharashtra on October 21. The same date goes for bypolls in 63 assembly seats across seventeen states, one Lok Sabha seat in Bihar and one for Puducherry assembly. The results will be announced on October 24.

The seventeen states where bypolls will be held are Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Punjab, Odisha, Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana.

Addressing to the press on Saturday the Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said, “I request the cooperation of all stakeholders in this democratic exercise.”

Last date for filing the nomination is September 30 and October 3 is the last date for withdrawing the nomination.

In Karnataka seventeen rebel MLAs resigned in July and collapsed the HD Kumaraswamy-Congress coalition government. Voters in fifteen assembly constituencies will cast their ballot.

Following the release of final citizens’s list in August Assam will be having first by-elections for four assembly constituencies.

In Bihar four assembly constituencies and one Lok Sabha seat will go into polls.

Uttar Pradesh will have assembly elections for eleven constituencies, Kerala for five seats, Gujarat and Punjab for four each, Sikkim for three, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan for two seats each, and the rest for one seat each.

Sunil Arora appealed the political parties to avoid the use of plastic in their poll campaign and join Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue.

He said, “Election campaigns impose an environmental cost upon us. We appeal to political parties to avoid use of plastic and use only environment-friendly material in their campaigns.”
