Hefty fines for breaking traffic rules. Basics briefed

Under the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019, the new traffic penalties have came into effect on Sunday. Traffic rules violation now means hefty fine and below are some important updates:

Driving without using the seat-belt is to invite a fine of Rs 1,000. The increase is 10 times. Earlier the fine was just Rs 100.

Use of mobile phone while driving will attract a fine of Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000. The earlier fine was Rs 1,000.

A fine of Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000 will be levied for drunk driving.

If way is not given to ambulance, fire brigade and other emergency vehicles, there will be a fine of Rs 10,000.

Licece-less driving means a fine of Rs 5,000. It has been hiked from Rs 500.

Driving despite disqualification means a fine of Rs 10,000. Previously the fine was just Rs 500.

You need to depart between Rs 1,000 and 2,000 for overspeeding. The penalty has been hiked from Rs 400 to Rs 1,000.

Driving without insurance means you will be fined by Rs 2,000 under the new traffic rules.

Guardian or vehicle owner will be fined with Rs 25,000 if underage drives the vehicle and road offence is met. It will attract three years of jail and registration will be cancelled too.
