Finally, after hours of waiting Indian Air Force pilot Abhinandan Varthaman is back home from the captivity of Pakistan.

Tensions at peak between India, Pakistan; IAF pilot missing

Thousands of Indians gathered carrying Indian flag on the border, at Wagah/Attari, to welcome the Wing Commander who finally was handed over by Pakistan at around 9:15 pm.

Vice Chief Marshal RGK Kapoor said, “Wing Commander Abhinandan has just been handed over to us. He will be taken now for a detailed medical checkup. This check up is mandatory as he had to eject from an airplane which would have put his entire body under stress.”

Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and others including Mamata Banerjee welcomed the return back of IAF pilot from Pakistan.

Tensions between the two neighboring countries are at peak following a suicide bomber killed more than 40 army men in Kashmir on February 14. Terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed responsibility of the attack.

Amid mounting outrage India carried out counter-terror operation on February 26 and claimed to have hit JeM training camp in Pakistan occupied Kashmir.

A day later Pakistan retaliated with a large air formation. It was a total of 24 fighter jet planes and included some F-16s too.

Abhinandan shot down one of the F-16 but his plane too was hit and he bailed out. He landed in PoK and was taken into Pakistan’s custody.
