Justice Ranjan Gogoi Recommended As Next CJI

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra wrote to Union government Tuesday recommending the name of Justice Ranjan Gogoi as his successor following his retirement on October 2.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi Recommended As Next CJI

Gogoi is one of the most senior Supreme Court judges and one of the four who had taken part in an unprecedented press conference against Misra over selective case allocation.

The other three were Justices J. Chelameswar (since retired), Madan B Lokur and Kurian Joseph.

It is a tradition the outgoing CJI recommends the most senior SC judge. President will now appoint Gogoi as the next chief justice who will take the office from October 3.

Memorandum of Procedure governs appointment of members of the higher judiciary. It reads, “Appointment to the office of the Chief Justice of India should be of the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court considered fit to hold the office.”

The law minister will seek the recommendation of outgoing CJI and after receiving the recommendation it places the letter before the prime minister. President is thereafter advised on the matter.

Earlier this year Gogoi supported the need for independent journalists and sometimes noisy judges to defend democracy.

He added SC does not need a reform, but a revolution.
