Kerala MP to boycott RD celebrations over Brazilian Prez’s invitation

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is invited as Chief Guest for the January 26 Republic Day celebrations to reset ties between the two countries, but Kerala MP Binoy Viswam believes he would be boycotting the event on Sunday in Delhi.

Viswam wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “His actions in Brazil and at the global stage are directly against the very ethos of the Indian Constitution that we celebrate on Republic Day.”

Viswam is a senior CPI leader and member of Rajya Sabha. He served as Forest Minister in the VS Achuthananthan government during 2006-2011 and presently has taken the chair of Kerala Tourism Development Corporation Employees’ Federation president.

He claims inaction of Brazilian Prez over Amazon rainforest burning caused irreperable damage while India is a committed country in addressing climate change.

He also reminded Modi that action of Bolsonaro that he sought against India in the WTO over providing aid to sugarcane farmers in Brazil.

President Bolsonaro arrived national capital on Friday. He is on a four-day visit to India. Modi welcomed him at the airport.

Modi said the president’s visit will strengthen ties between India and Brazil in the field of energy, defence and agriculture.
