Larsen and Toubro Gets Contract to Build ‘Statue of Unity’
The work on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet project “Statue of Unity”, which will be the tallest statue in the world of India’s first home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, is all set to kick off on the 31st of October 2014. The proposed 182 metre ‘Statue of Unity’ will be built on the Sadhu Bet river island near Vadodara in Gujarat. Once completed, this statue would be the world’s tallest statue.
The work order to build the “Statue of Unity” was handed over to leading engineering company, Larsen and Toubro, by the Gujarat government on 27th October 2014. The estimated cost of completion of the statue is 2,979 crores. The construction commences on 31 October 2014 and would be completed in four years time.
An amount of Rs. 1347 crores would be spent on the main statue with about Rs. 235 crores to be used up to construct the exhibition hall. An amount of Rs. 83 crores will be spent on the bridge that would connect the memorial to the mainland and Rs. 657 crores has been allotted to carry out maintenance of the statue for 15 years after its construction.
The “Statue of Unity” will be twice the size of the Statue of Liberty which stands at 93 metres. The project will also provide an exhibition hall with audio visual presentation on the life of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The Gujarat Government is expecting the ‘Statue of Unity’ to be a major tourist attraction for people from all over the world. It will help in boosting tourism in Gujarat and the project is also expected to give employment to the people living in the tribal area of Narmada district.
This project was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31st October 2013 when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. 31st October is the birth anniversary of great Sardar Patel. Modi had also launched a nationwide campaign to collect iron to build the ‘Statue of Unity’. The Gujarat government has stated that iron was collected from over 7 lakh villages across India.
The ‘Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust’ (SVPRET) has been given the duty of constructing the ‘Statue of Unity’ with Gujarat Chief Minister Anandhi Patel as its chairman. The tallest statue will be spread in 19,700 sq. metre area surrounded by a man-made lake that spreads across 12 kms of area. Turner Constructions, a leading construction company that built famous ‘Burj Khalifa’ in Dubai, has been roped in as a consultant to the ‘Statue of Unity’ project.
