M Venkaiah Naidu is the new and 15th Vice-President of India with an emphatic victory over Gopalkrishn Gandhi by 516 votes out of 771 votes polled in the 786-member electoral college.

The 68-year-old senior BJP leader and former Union Minister said he is thankful to the Prime Minister and all his party leaders for the support.

He humbly added to be utilizing the vice-presidential institution to uphold the dignity of the Upper House and also to strengthen the hands of the president.

How 'Kabaddi' Led M Venkaiah Naidu To Vice-President Candidate

He will be taking oath on August 11 at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan by President Ram Nath Kovind.

The current Vice-President Hamid Ansari will be retiring on August 10.

After the poll result announcement Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted he was confident the leader would serve India as a diligent and dedicated vice-president.

The PM visited Naidu’s residence with BJP president Amit Shah too.

Until now, since the BJP-led NDA government came to power in 2014 with a clear majority, the Upper House was dominated by the Opposition, but now BJP has become the single largest party by overtaking Congress by one seat.

Naidu is from Andhra Pradesh and it is viewed the BJP will get good backing of southern states parties including YSR, TRS and AIADMK.
