Magsaysay Awardee Sandeep Pandey house detained for Kashmir protest planning

A protest titled “Stand for Kashmir” against abolition of Article 370 failed at Gandhi statue in Hazratganj on Sunday evening after house arrest of Magsaysay Award winner Sandeep Pandey and his activist wife Arundhati Dhuru in Lucknow for couple of hours. on Sunday.

Sandeep Pandey said, “All of a sudden, police in four vans arrived at our house in the morning and told us that we cannot stage the dharna, because of prohibitory orders in the city… They said the prohibitory orders would be lifted after Independence Day. So I told them that we would stage the dharna after the orders are lifted. Yet, they are standing outside my house and no one is allowed to enter or leave the house.”

The national convener of the National Alliance of People’s Movement added police were deployed outside his house and barred him and his wife from moving out.

Sandeep Pandey further said the police left at around 4 pm and a candlelight protest was planned to take place from 6 pm to 7 pm, but police asked them to postpone as the Muslim would observe Bakri Eid festival on Monday.

The couple agreed to postpone the protest “Stand for Kashmir.”

According to Sandeep Pandey, until 1.30 pm, when he was stopped to leave the house, he was not aware being under house arrest.

In the afternoon station house officer of Hazratganj arrived and thereafter the police left the house.

The protest is now scheduled for August 16.
