Manmohan Singh awards Arun Jaitley for GST; BJP tweets “Gabbar Singh Tax, Rahul Gandhi?”

Bharatiya Janata Party asks Congress leader Rahul Gandhi whether GST still means Gabbar Singh Tax following The Hindu BusinessLine’s “changemaker of the year” award presented to Goods and Services Tax Council by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley accepted the award on behalf of the council at an event on Saturday in New Delhi.

The Congress as well as its leader Manmohan Singh have been critical of the GST that was implemented in 2017.

BJP tweeted, “Gabbar Singh Tax, Rahul Gandhi?”

Rahul Gandhi often referred GST as Gabbar Singh Tax blaming Modi government for implementing it hastily. Lately he accused the government in one his interviews of aggravating unemployment crisis by introducing demonetization and GST.

Manmohan Singh too has been a critic to both the policies of Modi government. He called the two as “twin blows” at an even in Gujarat in 2017. He said decisions of government have broken back of our small businesses.

On Friday the former PM added there was no room for authoritarian impositions in India as such steps is causing business community to lose faith in the government.

Singh further said, “As prime minister, you have to factor in the political and social implications… No innovations in the public policy realm can succeed without a reasonable consensus about it. We have opted for a democratic path for ourselves. There is no room for authoritarian impositions from above”
