Mobile Gaming Trends: The Most Popular iOS Games in October 2016
The world of mobile games is constantly shifting, as new titles, new game types are released by the development community. As such, the list of the most played iPhone / iPad games is also in a constant state of flux, although some well-known franchises and developers are constantly present in the list. As you might expect, the list looks completely different depending on which region you’re looking at, showing a different taste – and different access – in different markets. Below, you’ll find the latest list of the top grossing and most downloaded iOS games in all the most important regions this October.
US: Electronic Arts tops the downloads chart
Two new EA games, FIFA Mobile Soccer and Plants vs. Zombies: Heroes, both debuted in the first, and second spots on the list of the most downloaded iOS apps this October. Aidan Sabourin’s Bottle Flip 2K16 has climbed to the third place, overtaking several established games in the process. When it comes to revenues, though, things look a bit different: Pokémon GO remained the top-grossing iOS app in the US this October, followed by Mobile Strike, Clash Royale, Game of War – Fire Age, and Clash of Clans.
King’s Candy Crush is still performing well, and so is Big Fish Casino – these are constantly in or around the top 10 list. EA’s Madden NLF Mobile finally made it to the top 10 list, climbing 5 positions since last month.
Europe: A different story
Europe’s different policies on gambling are leaving their footprints on the top list once again: no social casino app (very successful in the US) has made it to the top 10 list this October. Due to a more liberal stance on online casinos, the European audience is free to choose among a series of real money operators (who also offer their games in a free to play regimen). They can head over to the All Slots for a quick spin on the slots, a few hands of blackjack or any other game they can think of. They are free to find out how to play online keno at All Slots casino without risking a cent of their cash, but they can also go for the real money version of all games at All Slots once they reach the legal age. This changes things for some developers – games that are successful in Australia, Canada, and the US are nowhere near the top list thanks to the competition of the All Slots Casino and its likes.
Supercell’s Clash Royale took over the top spot on the list this October, while Pokémon GO lost three positions, falling to the fourth place in Europe. Clash of Clans climbed two spots to #2, while Game of War: Fire Age maintained its third position for another month. King’s Candy Crush Saga and Candy Crush Soda Saga are still in the top 10, and Supercell’s Hay Day also maintained its 9th position this October. MARVEL’s Contest of Champions has, in turn, climbed one spot this month, making it to the top 10 list for the first time.
China: NetEase dominates the top 10
Chinese game developer NetEase has taken over the list of the top grossing iPhone games this October, with Onmyoji occupying the first position in the list, and three more games – Fantasy Westward Journey, Ghost Story, and Fantasy Westward Journey 2 – further down. The game with the second most revenue was Tencent’s King of Glory, climbing three spots from the previous month. Still, NetEase remains the fastest growing game developer on the Chinese market.
Blizzard’s Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft entered the top 20 list this October, debuting in the 13th spot of the list.
