Prime Minister Narendra Modi renamed Kolkata Port Trust Sunday after Jan Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee while addressing the 150th anniversary programme of the trust in Kolkata.

The rechristened however drew criticism from opposition parties and scheduled West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee skipped the programme. No ministers from the Trinamool Congress government too were present at the event.

CPI(M) politburo member Mohammed Salim alleged the PM has become a name-changer instead of game-changer.

Addressing the ceremony at Netaji Indoor Stadium Modi said contributions of Mookerjee and BR Ambedkar led to the development of India after the independence, but their suggestions were never implemented after the two resigned from the government.

Citing Mookerjee being father of industrialization in the country the PM said henceforth Kolkata Port Trust will be called as Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port.

Modi said it is painful to him seeing the poor in West Bengal not getting benefits of Centre’s welfare schemes.

Hinting at a change in 2020 Assembly polls he added that farmers and poor patients of the state will not remain deprived for long of the Centre’s welfare schemes.

Modi laid foundation stone of infrastructure projects for port’s modernization and expansion.

He said, “Our country’s coasts are gateways to development, the government has started the Sagarmala programme to improve connectivity.”
