He renamed two other islands too – Neil Island would henceforth be known as Shaheed Dweep while people will call Havelock Island as Swaraj Dweep. All the three islands are tourist spots in Andaman and Nicobar islands.

Bose hoisted Tricolor flag on Rose Island on 30th December 1943 and addressing to the public on the 75th anniversary of the event the prime minister said, “The first Prime Minister of the Azad Hind government Subhash Babu had made India’s independence resolution on the soil of Andaman.”

Donning the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army) of Bose he said India draws inspiration from Andaman and in 1943 Netaji himself suggested that Andaman and Nicobar Islands should be renamed as Shahid and Swaraj Dweep respectively.

Modi announced would be setting up a deemed university in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and it will be named after Bose. He released a commemorative stamp too.

Modi visited Cellular Jail and defined it as no less than temples as great freedom fighters such as Indu Bhushan Roy, Babab Bhan Singh and Veer Savarkar were tortured here by the ruling British government.

Also commonly called as Kala Pani, the Cellular Jail was built between 1896 and 1906.
