More than dozen stone-pelting incidents in Srinagar: Police

More than a dozen protests at night and about eight daytime stone-pelting incidents on Saturday indicated a sudden worsening of law and order in Srinagar following speech of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan at the UN General Assembly a day before.

At least fifteen locations across the capital witnessed peace disruption by youth who hit the streets, raised slogans and clashed with security forces.

The most affected places were Bagh-e-Mehtab, Chanapora, Soura, Lal Bazar and Batapora. Security forces used tear-smoke shells to disperse the protesters.

A police officer in the old city said several youth entered mosques and raised anti-India slogans using the public address system. Religious songs were played to give sudden rise to protest.

According to police, at least eight incidents of stone-pelting were recorded on Saturday in the old city as well as the uptown area.

The police added, “There were nine major blockades erected by protesters.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about terrorism and stripping of Article 370 from Kashmir at the Howdy Modi event in Houston in the presence of President Trump and made a clear reference to rival Pakistan.
