Muslims write to Mamata Banerjee not to spare accused in Ushoshie case

Muslim citizens of Kolkata have written a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee requesting not to spare the accused in the cases of former Miss India and NRS doctor assaults.

In both incidents, the accused are Muslims. Doctors in NRS hospital were attacked by relatives and mobs of a patient who died during treatment and model Ushoshie Sengupta was assaulted by bikers mid-night on Kolkata roads.

The letter reads, “We are Muslims living in Kolkata for decades. We have been deeply concerned with two events that occurred recently – the attack on doctors and the attack on actor Ushoshie Sengupta. The attackers in both cases instances were members of our community – Muslims. We are grieved and embarrassed.”

Apart from punishment request for the accused the letter suggests Mamata Banerjee to educate and encourage youths belonging to the community regarding gender sensitization, law compliance and civic consciousness.

Mudar Patherya, Mustafa Judge, Hena Nafis, Dr. Zahid H Gangjee, Mamoon Akhtar, Shabnam Alam, Dr. Aquil Basrai and other activists signed the letter.

Lately, after the NRS doctors assault case the Mamata Banerjee government has been alleged was shielding the accused belonging to the Muslim community.

Seven people have been arrested in the Ushoshie Sengupta harassment case and all of them are Muslims.
