Lakhs of people in the northeastern part of India is now stateless and the haunt to find more such long-time intruders continues. Suspects in Assam are burdened to proof themselves to be Indian citizens.

Irrespective of cast, religion or language, Assamese in large number is just keeping the hope that the final NRC (National Register of Citizens) list, published on August 31, comes out error-free.

Illegal immigration, mostly from neighboring Bangladesh, has rocked Assam for a long time.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh is not admitting the people in the statteless list entered India illegally. This turns to be a serious problem.

A NRC list published on Friday found 19,06,657 people entered India illegally and now they are stateless. The total number of applicants were 3.29 crore.

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said about the list, “This has been a mixed bag for us. People who came in post-1971 as refugees will face problems… We sympathise with them, but there are many who have manipulated the NRC process and we will look into it.”

Several people have been arrested too for faking documents in the process of proving themselves as Indian citizens.

Sarma added that there is no panic in the state and many are in celebratory mood.

Unsatisfied with the new list, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “The NRC fiasco has exposed all those who tried to fake political mileage out of it. They have a lot to answer to the nation.”
