NRC will be implemented across India: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said National Register of Citizens (NRC) will not be limited to Assam or the eastern region, but to be extended across India to identify undocumented immigrants.

Amit Shah told the Rajya Sabha, “We will identity all the illegal immigrants and infiltrators living on every inch of this country and deport them as per the international law.”

He was responding to the query of Samajwadi Party member Javed Ali Khan whether the NRC will be extended beyond Assam.

He said that currently the process is being implemented in Assam to wean out illegal immigrants from every inch of India.

Amit Shah added further that those who will be found as illegal immigrants will be deported as per international law.

The NRC document in Assam is to contain names of all the genuine citizens of the state. In the first draft about 41 lakh people have been excluded but 36 lakh of those have filed claims against it.

The draft is currently being updated under strict monitoring of the apex court.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party hailed the move saying it is a strong action against infiltration.

Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections the party mentioned the implementation of NRC across India in its manifesto.

Amit Shah vowed the same in an address to a poll rally in West Bengal. In April 2018 too he made a similar claim.
