OMG! NSA-Powered Code Turned Ransomware And Attacked Computers In 74 Countries

NSA-powered WannaCrypt ransomware has infected mass computers in at least 74 countries across the world and the victims include universities, hospitals and business houses.

It is learned even national telco and Fedex have come under the grip of the latest WannCrypt ransomware worm, aka WannaCrypt or Wcry.

The worm was once exploited by NSA for the purpose of hijacking and spying on targets. It was later learned to have been stolen from the agency and in April this year was leaked online too.

This way the cyber-weapon of the United States government reached the hands of willing miscreant and immediately was used for hijacking thousands of Windows machines on the internet.

The worm spreads across the network and it manages exploiting a vulnerability in the SMB file-sharing services of Microsoft.

It encrypts as many files as it can and later charges its victims ransom of about $300 to $600 in Bitcoin.

Kaspersky’s research team said they have recorded over 45,000 attacks in 74 countries.

The team added, “It’s important to note that our visibility may be limited and incomplete and the range of targets and victims is likely much, much higher.”
