Padmaavati Protestors Burn Vehicles, Pelt Stones In Ahmedabad

Protestors went on rampage Tuesday evening in Ahmedabad protesting against the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavati, retitled as Padmaavat. They burned vehicles and pelted stones despite the orders of Supreme Court to let the film release across India on January 25, ahead of the long weekend.

According to police there were around 200 protesters which went around multiplexes on the upmarket SG Highway in Ahmedabad. More than a dozen of two-wheelers and other vehicles were set on fire and cinema halls were pelted with stones.

The protests were surprising as most of the cinema hall and multiplex owners in Gujarat had earlier declared not to screen the movie.

The 190-crore movie earned angry protests in Rajasthan in past few months resulting with non-release in the scheduled time. Groups like the Karni Sena claims the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed movie distorts their history as the 13th-century queen, Padmini, has been disrespected by showing her romantically involved with Alauddin Khilji, the Muslm invader to India.

However, Bhansali has always denied all such disrespect and it is also a fact the Karni Sena’s claims may not turn true as they have not yet seen the movie.

January 26 is Friday and the film is expecting a good collection by releasing a day ahead of long weekend. It will clash with Akshay Kumar starrer Padman.

Akshay Kumar has shrugged down of any competition with Padmaavat saying it will be a long weekend and all the movies can come.

CBFC has given a U/A certification to Padmaavat.
