Pakistan Bans Bollywood Movies Amid Cross-Border Tensions

The tensions between India and Pakistan lately are not just limited to cross-border terrorism and disputes over the divided territory of Kashmir, but entertainment industry too has been jolted.

Pakistan cinemas have banned Indian films in the country calling an act of solidarity with the armed forces.

The Indian movie boycotts were announced in Islamabad, Karachin and Lahore. The move was a followup of Indian Motion Picture Producers Association’s decision on Thursday to ban Pakistani actors from working in Bollywood.

Right-wing nationalist politicians in India ordered actors from Pakistan to leave India immediately.

According to BBC South Asia Editor Charles Haviland, Bollywood movies are highly popular on the other side of the border and Pakistan’s own movie industry is very slim.

The Pakistani cinema chains said their decision is spontaneous and for at least a couple of weeks or to wait until normality in relationships between the two nations resume.

It is not to forget the Pakistan film industry to suffer financial loss due to the ban.

For decades Kashmir has been the main agenda of disputes and it has led to two wars too in past.

Meanwhile, amid the heightened tensions the Indian villages near to Pakistan border have been evacuated and relocated.

Earlier this week India conducted ‘surgical strikes’ beyond the Line of Control (LoC) to damage terror camps in the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) region and killed about three dozen terrorists.
