Pakistani Social Media Starlet Qandeel Baloch Murdered By Brother
Social media personality Qandeel Baloch has been killed Friday night by her brother in Punjab province of Pakistan after posting controversy pictures of her with prominent Muslim cleric Mufti Qavi recently.
Qavi is a former member of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.
According to police spokeswoman Nabila Ghazanfar, they have been informed about the killing and are now investigating the case.
Honor killing is common in Pakistan and every year hundreds of women are murdered as punishment for violating conservative norms.
Baloch became a household name after posting a video of her that went viral pouting at the camera and asking “How em looking” in 2014. Since then she had been posting bold and raunchy photographs and video of herself.
In her latest pictures with the cleric she said both had enjoyed cigarettes and soft drings in the day time during holy month of Ramadan.
Practicing Muslims fast during the month from dawn to dusk.
Police official Azhar Akram said the brother had strangled Baloch to death. He is yet to be arrested. Presently he is on run.
Parents of the social media starlet have been detained.
The Express Tribune reports Mufti Qavi may lead the funeral prayers of Baloch.
Baloch was born as Fauzia Azeem.
Filmmaker Sharmeed Obaid-Chinoy said murder of Baloch would make women feel less safe and no woman is safe in Pakistan.
Earlier in 2016 Sharmeen won Oscar for her documentary titled “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness.”
