Indian President Pranab Mukherjee said the country need to be extra careful in alleviating poor’s suffering amid demonetisation that might become unavoidable for the expected progress in long run.

Talking about the elections to be held in seven states in 2017 Mr Mukherjee said India’s democracy is one of the most vibrant in the world due to fair and free election conduct.

He added the elections reflect values, beliefs and attitudes of the people towards political environment.

In his New Year’s address to Governors and Lieutenant Governors Mr Mukherjee said the 2016 was a year of mixed fortunes as it began with a positive note and ended with slowing down of exports due to global cues.

The president added the 2016 saw a good monsoon and so agricultural production is expected to be improving as well as there will be an increase in rural employment and incomes too.

He further mentioned, “GDP growth of 7.2 per cent in the first half of 2016-17, the same as that of last year, is a pointer to the fact that our economic recovery has been on solid grounds.”
