REMARKABLE CHANGE IN POSTING SYSTEM FOR CRPF JAWANS
Alarmed by increasing attrition and suicides in its ranks due to tough working conditions and growing alienation of jawans from their families, CRPF has brought in a new system of postings which seeks to keep personnel close to their home throughout their career. CRPF has divided the force into four zones – north, central, north east and south west. A jawan hailing from a particular zone will remain posted in the same zone throughout his career, helping him be close to his family. The choice of posting in a particular zone would be with the personnel.
In the present system, a jawan from the north east may be posted in Andhra Pradesh, thus making his journey back home very long. “Such jawans visit their families only when they get long leave which is not easy to come by,” said a CRPF officer.
The move has come in the backdrop of close to 10,000 jawans quitting the force and 130 committing suicide in the past three years. Accommodation of family close to the force base has been a big problem with the government delivering housing to only 12% jawans as compared to the promise of 24%. The new system aims to offset that disadvantage by posting the personnel in their home zone.
