Rohit Sharma was dropped on 4 runs by Thisara Perrera. But, after that he played a flawless innings to amass a total of 264 runs and take the Indian team past 400 runs in their 50 overs. This is a very big score put on board by India and with the current form that Sri Lankan team is in, this score looks miles away. Rohit Sharma now not only has the distinction of becoming the first batsman  to score two double centuries in ODI, but he also now holds the record of scoring the maximum runs by a batsman in a one day international (264 runs).

Rohit Sharma beat the previous world record score of 219 held by countryman Virendra Sehwag in 2011. Rohit’s first double hundred score of 209 came against Australia in 2013. Now, a year later, Rohit has scored another double century, a feat that would be very difficult to achieve in the near future. The Mumbai opener hit 32 boundaries and nine sixes in his knock of 264 and was out of the last ball of the innings caught at long off.

Rohit after this mammoth innings, said that he was not tired and was ready to bat on this Kolkata batting strip for another 50 overs. He wanted to make a big contribution once he reached the score of 50. He said that Kolkata is a very special ground for him as he made his first class debut as well as the Test match debut in Kolkata. He has also got his IPL hundred here and hence this ground is a very special one for him. The sloppy fielding and bowling of the Sri Lankan team helped Rohit achieve this massive feat as he was dropped two more times after passing the 200 mark.
