UN Security Council to hold closed door meeting over Kashmir today

The Kashmir matter will be discussed today at 7:30 pm IST (10:00 am local time) at the UN Security Council in Poland behind closed doors.

The last time such rare meeting was held on the Himalayan region in 1965.

According to a diplomat on condition of anonymity to PTI, Pakistan’s all-weather ally China has asked the UN Security Council for such closed consultations on Kashmir issue following a letter from Islamabad seeking a meeting.

The diplomat said, “China asked for closed consultations on the Security Council agenda item ‘India Pakistan Question’. The request was in reference to the Pakistani letter to Security Council President.”

India scrapped Article 370 from its Constitutuion earlier this month that provides special status to Jammu and Kashmir state saying it was an internal matter.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged both the nations to exercise maximum restraint highlighting Simla Agreement that rejects any third-party mediation on the matter.

Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said his country has called for an emergency meeting of the UNSC after the revoke of Article 370 by India for the J&K state.

In a television report the minister was quoted saying, “The world needs to realise that it is the issue of humanity and not a piece of land between the two countries.”
