User Base of WhatsApp India Crosses 70 Million
WhatsApp a very popular mobile messenger service has taken India by storm. It has reported that it has a user base of over 70 million users in India. These users use WhatsApp at least once a month. The amount of WhatsApp users in India represents 1/10th of the global users of WhatsApp, which is a phenomenal figure. This shows how Indians have taken a liking to this popular mobile messaging app. This information was shared by Neeraj Arora, the Vice President of WhatsApp, during the fifth annual INK Conference.
Arora has said that the blockbuster deal between Facebook and WhatsApp earlier this year amounts to $19 billion. With this deal, Facebook has access to WhatsApp’s user base of 600 million. The WhatsApp take over by Facebook will not affect the distinct identity that WhatsApp is enjoying at the moment. There is no way that WhatsApp will be merged with Facebook and both of them will be two separate entities. India is one the biggest markets for WhatsApp and they are also looking to add more Indian connections to their app.
WhatsApp has only 80 employees in its fold and will greatly benefit from the social networking giant Facebook. The employees will get a chance to learn a lot with this association with Facebook. Arora was the business executive head of the popular internet search engine Google when he first heard about WhatsApp. He later joined the company as its business head and within two years he was able to stitch $19 billion deal with the popular social networking site Facebook. A truly remarkable achievement for the former IIT Delhi and ISB Hyderabad student.
Arora also goes on to saying that he too had considered buying WhatsApp three years ago when it was finding its roots. He says that at that time the cost of the company would have been in the low tens of million dollars, but now it is way beyond his reach. Here, he wishes to emphasize that the WhatsApp mobile messaging app has grown multifold in just a few years time.
The WhatsApp user base was just 30 million when Arora joined the company three years back. But, now it has multiplied rapidly and stands at 600 million users all over the world. The main reason behind the huge success of WhatsApp is the focus of the company on the product as a whole and not on the business part. The founders just wanted to develop a cool product that can be easily used by the masses and this is what they have been able to achieve.
