Even though there were too many reports during the elections run-up about Rupani like he was in danger of facing the ignominy of defeat and was on a sticky wicket, but he proved everyone wrong by winning his Rajkot West seat by a good margin of 55,000 votes and to pave his way for his second innings in Gujarat as the state chief minister.

Born in Burma (now Myanmar) in 1956, Vijay Rupani became the General Secretary of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) during his college days and thereafter joined RSS. In 1971 he joined Jan Sangh.

In 1987 Rupani became corporator of Rajkot Municipal Corporation. Between 1996 and 1997 he served as Mayor of Rajkot City and thereafter became the spokesperson of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for Gujarat.

He was Chairman of Manifesto Implementation Committee from 1988 to 2006 and thereafter was elected as member of parliament of Rajya Sabha.

During the Narendra Modi era as Chief Minister of Gujarat he served as Chairman of Gujarat Municipal Finance board in 2013 and directed 159 municipalities towards the path of progress.

In August 2016 he took the oath as 16th chief minister of Gujarat.

He runs a charitable institute named Pujit Rupani Memorial Trust for Charity.
