GTA was signed in 2011 after three years agitation by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha for the demand of Gorkhaland, the name that was first coined by Gorkha National Liberation Front leader Subhash Ghisingh. It replaced the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council of 1988.

On 7 March 2012 the President of India Pratibha Patil finally gave her assent to the GTA Bill of West Bengal.

Currently the GJM is attempting to ratchet pressure on the state as well as central government threatening fast-unto-death agitations during the monsoon session of the Parliament.

Meanwhile, ex-servicemen has demanded West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to withdraw her allegation that linked their movement of separate state with terror outfits.

Earlier today the GJM burned copies of the GTA accord and supporters smashed tubelights on their bodies to highlight alleged police atrocities.
