What To Expect From Modi-Trump Meeting In Washington

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will get a chance to know United States President Donald Trump better and vice versa when the two leaders will meet on June 26 in Washington.

Senior Fellow for India with the Asia Society Policy Institute, Marshall Bouton, said there may not be major breakthrough announcements, but the outcome will be mostly positive.

Bouton authored a comprehensive ASPI paper in May and said the Trump government should move decisively and engage the Indian administration in order to deepen the cooperation between the two nations and manage potential disputes.

He added both the leaders must start by emphasizing strongest areas of mutual interest.

It is also expected Modi may share his view as well as concerns about Pakistan’s behavior on terrorism. He may also be seeking to know what strategy Trump has on Afghanistan.

The two leaders could also be discussing about China.

Bouton also added, “What is the US interest in Afghanistan, that is highly relevant to India’s interest. So I am sure that will be a very important subject of conversation. As part of that and also separately what does Prime Minister Modi want to hear from Trump about the US relationship with Pakistan going forward.”
