In a statement the NPCI added as of now a total of four banks will be joining the BHIM UPI model for the new WhatsApp Pay and following the end of successful beta phase total product will be released.

The statement further noted, “Broad principles for interoperability like ability to send and receive money through any BHIM UPI ID, intent and collect call and read and generate BHIM / Bharat QR code are required in final BHIM UPI app. BHIM UPI enabled app which fulfils such principles only will be permissible for full scale public launch.”

Meanwhile, Paytim’s founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma tweeted, “Nice! I hope full obligation of BHIM like security and tx (transactions) data sovereignty too will be implemented before full launch.”

WhatsApp has a customer base of over 200 million in the country and this has created a threat to other payment players including Paytm. Multiple debates have hit over the impact the new entrants will have on incumbents.

NPCI confirms the new WhatsApp Pay will also have login and password features similar to all other BHIM UPI apps.
