Who Is Ram Nath Kovind In Indian Politics

Born on 1 October 1945 to a farmer father in Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Ram Nath Kovind is a Dalit leader and member of Baratiya Janata Party (BJP), which he joined in 1991.

Kovind graduated in commerce from a Kanpur college and thereafter studied LLB from DAV College, affiliated with Kanpur University.

Before studying law he prepared for civil services examination too, but didn’t join even after passing out the exam on the third attempt as he got selected for an allied service and not the much desired IAS.

Between 1977 and 1979 Kovind was Central Government Advocate in the Delhi High Court and also served between 1980 and 1993 as a Central Government standing counsel in the Supreme Court.

Between 1998 and 2002 he became President of the BJP Dalit Morcha and President of the All-India Koli Samaj too.

Kovind contested from Bhognipu and Ghatampur assembly constituencies representing BJP, but lost both the polls.

In April 1994 Kovind was elected as a Rajya Sabha MP from his own state and served for twelve years until March 2006.

Kovind became Governor of Bihar in 2015 and was praised for constituting a judicial commission to investigate irregularities in several sectors including miss-management of funds.
