3 JeM militants killed, DySP martyred in fresh encounter in Kashmir

Encounter in Kulgam district of the Valley on Sunday led to the death of a deputy superintendent of police and an Army jawan. Three militants linked to Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) were also killed.

The deputy superintended Aman Kumar Thakur was martyred while being taken to hospital following a shot in his neck. The Army jawan Naib Subedar Somveer of 34 Rashtriya Rifles was martyred at the encounter spot, said officials.

According to officials the encounter occurred during a search operation and a cordon following a tip-off in Turigam of South Kashmir. Identities of the militants are yet to be ascertained.

Following the encounter the locals became violent leading to clashes with security forces. Eight civilians were injured too and were taken to District Hospital. They were referred to Srinagar.

The deputy superintended was a 2011-batch Jammu and Kashmir Police Services officer and for past two years was posted in Kulgam, which is a terrorist-hit area. While being posted as DySP he has led several anti-terror operations. In January 2019 he received the DGP’s Commendation Medal and Certificate for exemplary service. He is a resident of Gogla in Doda district of the state. He is survived by wife, a six-year-old son and parents.

Jammu and Kashmir DGP Dilbagh Singh said a brave colleague has been lost.

A day before the Jammu and Kashmir police arrested about 150 people in continued crackdown on Kashmiri separatists in the Valley.
