Underworld don Abu Salem is awarded with life sentence by a Special TADA (Terrorism and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act) Court on Thursday, about 24 years after the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts that left more than 250 people dead.

Feroze Khan and Mohammed Taher Merchant have been convicted to death where as Karimullah Khas has been pronounced life sentence. Riyaz Siddiqui will be in jail for a period of 10 years.

The 1993 blasts are alleged to have been carried out by India’s one of the most wanted men, Dawood Ibrahim, and his accomplice Tiger Memon. It is said they wanted to avenge the death of Muslims during previous Hindu-Muslim riots that rocked the financial capital of India.

Dawood is in Pakistan but clueless about his exact location.

Abu Salem was one of the masterminds behind the attacks and he arranged vehicle that was used to transport arms and ammunition.

The court says Siddique transported RDX and ammunitions in a Maruti van to Bharuch in Gujarat and it is alleged he handed over the vehicle to Abu Salem.

Salem in his part distributed the stuff to other accused.

Abu Salem has been extradited from Lisbon, Portugal, a country that bars capital punishment. This is the reason he got away with a life sentence.

Abu Salem and his then-girlfriend, Bollywood actress Monica Bedi were extradited in November 2005.

Monica Bedi spent two years in prison in Portugal and two years here in India. She denies married to Abu Salem in a mosque in Los Angeles in November 2000 as being claimed by the underworld don.
