West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee appealed Saturday evening to agitating doctors to rejoin work even though the striking medical professionals confirmed to continue their protest against attacks on junior doctors.

Pan India doctors in thousands are protesting over an incident in Kolkata last Monday in which relatives of a dead patient assaulted three junior doctors of NRS Medical College.

Hours before the appeal doctors turned down Mamata Banerjee’s proposal for talks at the state secretariat amid demand the CM should hold open discussion with them at the hospital instead of a closed door meeting.

A joint statement by junior doctors said objectivity and safety of talks are doubtful in closed door meeting by a handful of their representatives.

The doctors are seeking Mamata Banerjee to talk to them at NRS hospital where the incident took place.

Meanwhile, the union ministry of home affairs issued an advisory to the state government requesting for a detailed report on the situation of ongoing strike by the doctors.

Union health minister Harsh Vardhan also called for punitive action against attack on health care professionals.
