The devotees were protesting in against women’s entry into the Sabarimala temple in Kerala and according to police more than 2,000 of them were arrested by Friday following last week’s violence.

Supreme Court had earlier permitted in its judgment entry of women of all ages into the Sabarimala temple. Earlier women between the menstruating ages of 10 and 50 were not allowed to enter.

Protestors opposing entry of women of the said ages gathered near the shrine between October 17 and 22 when the temple was publicly opened for all ages. No woman of menstruating age could enter the temple in the period.

Amit Shah added, “We [the BJP] will uproot this government if it continues arresting people who protested the Supreme Court verdict [on women’s entry into the Sabarimala,”

He was addressing to the crowd in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh and added, “The government has put more than 2,000 members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, BJP and other groups in jail… I would like to ask the government: whose property have they damaged? You are acting against Ayyappa devotees, so the whole country will stand behind them.”

Shah said it is not discrimination to women as there are temples where men are not allowed and all such are part of worship.
