Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar said National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be implemented in his state too on the lines of Assam.

Last week Jharkhand chief minister Raghubar Das too announced the same for his state adding that illegal Bangladeshi migrants will not be allowed to eat away the benefits of legal Muslim residents of the state.

The final draft on NRC for Assam was published on August 31 and it left out more than 1.9 million people. The list in the state to identify legal residents and undocumented immigrants was updated after 68 years.

The first of such kind in the northeastern state was prepared in 1951. In 2015 the apex court directed to update the list and in July 2018 a draft was published that left out four million people.

Manohar Lal Khattar added that Haryana is working on a family ID card format and data of which would be used in the NRC.

Former Haryana chief minister and Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda said, “What the CM has said is already the law. Foreigners have to leave. It is the responsibility of the government to identify them.”
