Indian Government To Open Passport Offices At Local Post Offices

Soon passport offices will be very near to your place. You don’t have to travel too far to get your passport. The government has a plan of opening passport kendras within a radius of 50 km. About 150 post offices will also operate as passport office.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said 149 new Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK).

Apart from these 149, the Ministry of External Affairs has also earlied announced 86 POPSKs in the first phase.

The initiative is a joint effort of both the Ministry of External Affairs and Department of Post.

According to joint secretary (consular, passport and visa division), Arun Chatterjee, as of now more than fifty POPSKs have been opened and those are handling in average about 3500 appointments per week.

Sushma Swaraj said the Narendra Modi government has opened sixteen PSKs and the priority is given to northeastern states.

She added that in total the government has opened or announced 251 PSKs and POPSKs.

Before the NDA government came into power in May 2014 there were 77 PSKs.

The minister added after taking charge of the segment she realized proximity being biggest hurdle while applying for a poassport.

Swaraj continued saying, “We have set up a target that no one has to travel more than a radius of 50 kms to get a passport.

She added that DoP is seeking to use 810 head post offices into such service.
