Multiplexes to only issue electronic tickets: GST council

Multiplexes are guided to sell tickets only in digital format by the government to facilitate smooth checking of GST evasion. The same may also be made mandatory for single-screen theaters soon.

The multiplexes need to issue a tax invoice electronically and so the digital format tickets will be deemed as a tax invoice.

With the new decision of GST council, it is to have a watch whether such invoices fit in B2C businesses. Until now only the B2B business houses used to follow it.

The e-invoicing proposal to multiplexes sets a beginning to extending it to other B2C transactions to keep in track complete e-trail of the value chain.

According to tax experts, the B2C transactions have leakage point as cash transactions are made and those are not always fully recorded. This results in tax evasion as well as the generation of black money or undocumented money.

In Friday’s GST council meeting chaired by finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, it was decided to implement e-invoices in the transport sector to help generate e-way bills for goods being transported with value more than Rs 50,000.

Meanwhile, it was also proposed to bring down a levy on electric vehicles and batteries.

The GST rate for state-run lotteries and state-backed lotteries are also being worked out. Currently, there is a GST of 12 percent of state-organized lotteries and 28 percent on state-authorized ones.
